Assimilation one year anniversary wrap up
It’s hard for me to
believe the year is whizzing by so quickly. Seems like just yesterday I was
wrapping up the underworld party, yet here I am wrapping up the Assimilation one
year anniversary. This show had multiple interests for us. Firstly, we were
finally going to get to meet End:
the DJ after sponsoring the Chrome Elemental tour and promising that we were
going to get off our lazy butts and get that interview done one of these days.
The second thing was that we were finally going to get to have Darkfaery Girl
Maven at a show where we could get a picture with her. (see our
myspace photos) The third thing was that we love going to Tulsa and staying
over because we love hotels! Why do we love hotels? We get to take a break from
the phone, the computer, and the cats! I’m sure the cats are glad when we leave
overnight too.
We spent the week before Assimilation taking flyers to
various locations and encouraging everyone we could round up to go with us. At
one point some people gave me a flyer and didn’t realize I had started the
circle. That happens to me a lot when we go out and promote and I still think
it’s funny every time.
We got through the stress of figuring out who we were
going to ride with at the last minute as usual and got to Tulsa the day of the
show at 4:30 pm and checked into the hotel. We gathered up our decorations and
tub of promotional materials,
Darkfaery girl applications, and headed to the Marquee. We got caught in a
loop of one way streets AGAIN and didn’t make it to the club until 6 pm even
after we said we’d be there at 5:30 pm…happens every time. You know how when you
go inside wal-mart you blink and it’s been two hours? That is how it is for us
and one way streets. It doesn’t matter who we ride with either.
I was
surprised that we managed to get the streamers and balloons up, get our table
set up, and get black table cloths on all of the tables in time to have a beer
and relax before the doors opened. That never happens, we are always still
setting up ten minutes after, so maybe the one way street Gods were kind to us
this time.
So let’s roll out the thanks on this one. First person I
have to thank is our Darkfaery Boy Promotional Director
James and his beautiful wife
Darkfaery Girl Trista, for going
beyond the pale at every event we are a part of. Couldn’t do this without them
and in this case it would have been a clusterfuck if James hadn’t been there to
help when Z got sick from the heat, smoke, and not enough food. Because of my
medical problems I count on Z for everything and when he is out of commission I
have no ground to stand on. Thanks guys for helping me cope with the stress.
Thank you cell phones.
Many thanks to Evan for funding our room and
gas, his donations to Darkfaery Subculture Magazine are limitless and I am sure
he gets tired of paying for so much, but he does it anyway. He even went out of
his way to pay admission for some of the Darkfaery boys and girls who didn’t
have money with them.
As always, thanks to my Darkfaery Girls and Boys for
representing. Specifically,
Mistress Eve, Rayne, and
Alice for being on top of things
that I didn’t even think of, for always offering us hospitality and trying to
take care of us. Thanks for having our backs, and sometimes our fronts! (wink
wink)
Thanks to Darkfaery girl Pumpkin for giving us a ride and
telling me how great I am all the time, even when I am yelling at people.
And Finally, Thanks to the
Assimilation crew and
Re:Mission Entertainment for having us out and slapping our logo on the
flyers, we appreciate that. See you at Combichrist!
January and February always seem to feature movies that scare the crap out of us. Makes me wonder if we’re just so horrified at what might possibly happen in the coming year that we steel ourselves with scary movies. Any theories on that?
At any rate, “Taken,” the movie about a teen being sold into slavery, and “The Uninvited,” about a ghost terrorizing a young woman,” were tops at the box office this weekend. Well, with goofy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” wedged right in the middle. Here’s the rundown from Box Office Mojo:
- Taken, $24.71M
- Paul Blart: Mall Cop, $13.87M
- The Uninvited, $10.32M
- Hotel for Dogs, $8.63M
- Gran Torino, $8.23M
- Slumdog Millionaire, $7.62M
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, $7.58M
- New in Town, $6.74M
- My Bloody Valentine 3D, $4.47M
- Inkheart, $3.72M

Book Review: Nightkeepers by Jessica Andersen
Book Review – Nightkeepers by Jessica Andersen
Book Review – Nightkeepers by Jessica Andersen
By Marisa O’Neill
When I received my copy of Jessica Andersen’s new book, Nightkeepers I was thrilled! I’d discovered a brand new author and a brand new series that has me so hooked, I can’t wait for the next book. Nightkeepers is not just another paranormal romance. Not by a long shot. It’s fresh, compelling, surprising, intricate and beautifully written.
Nightkeepers is the first book in The Novels of the Final Prophecy. Sounds like doom and gloom; the world coming to an end – well, yes, in fact that’s what it’s all about. In Jessica Andersen’s first book, based on Mayan mythology, we find out that ” Every twenty-six years, the earth, sun and moon align at the exact center of the Milky Way… and all hell breaks loose.” This is called the Great Conjunction. The last time this happened was in 24,000 B.C. and demons broke out of the underworld and destroyed civilization. The only thing standing between us and the end of the world are the Night Keepers. Guess what? The next Great Conjunction is scheduled for December 21, 2012. Oh yes, four years from now civilization as we know it will be in a fight for its life. And the Night Keepers, who are few and far between, are the only one’s who can stop it.
Ms. Andersen has created a series with a definite end point – 2012. I was intrigued. She has created an incredible world and introduced a host of characters who will have 4 years to resolve the conflicts she has created. By creating an endpoint, she ratchets up the tension and allows for a whole host of story lines and characters that must contribute to the whole in a meaningful, right now, way. I say, bravo!
Twenty years ago most of the Night Keepers were massacred when they were fighting the ultimate evil. The few surviving Night Keepers scattered to the corners of the earth with most of them being raised with no notion of who and what they are. Now, they must come together and learn their heritage, purpose and how to become a unit if they are going to save the world. You are immediately drawn into the premise. We find the hero – Strike Jaguar , working in a garden center when he is plummeted to a time and place not of his making. The heroine, Leah Daniels, a Miami narcotics detective, finds her self naked and strapped to an altar. She’s about to become a human sacrifice in an ancient Mayan ritual. And so the story begins.
Ms. Andersen’s pacing is spot on, the dialogue and quick banter are believable, humorous and illuminating, the action sequences are fast paced and exciting, the characters are intriguing and the world building fresh, impeccable and fascinating. There wasn’t a false note in this book. I applaud her heroine, Leah, a woman who can take care of herself and others and still have a hot romance with out diminishing who and what she is. I found her hero, Strike Jaguar, just as intriguing, strong yet flawed with the literal weight of the world on his shoulders; resilient enough to question himself and his actions and eventually not only listen to others but to trust himself.
I’m on board, I’m ready for the ride and excited about this new series The Novels of the Final Prophecy. So will I be a rabid fan – you betcha. Well rabid may not be the right word; but I’ll tell you this, next book? I’m so there. This is a definite Recommended Read!
