The lace should not be too loose so that the corset stays in place, but it also should not be too tight since it might cause breathing problems or even worse broken bones. Whatever the case a corset should not be worn for the first time at the event because when you wear one the breathing changes and the corset itself needs time to mold to your body.

Corsets create wonderful curves when correctly fitted. The key to a good fit is measuring yourself accurately. This is best accomplished by measuring yourself in front of a mirror. With your bra on, measure your full bust, under bust and waist. A corset is designed to fit a proportionate figure, which most manufacturers assume is a waist 8 inches smaller than the under bust. Another important piece of information is that corsets are not intended to be laced fully closed in the back. If your waist is a bit fuller, you will need to adjust the size of the corset up a bit. Also, if your bra cup size is DD or more, you will need to adjust the size of the corset up one size. For example, your full bust is 40 inches, your under bust is 37 and your waist is 32 inches. The correct size is 36 or 38. The size 36 will leave about 4 inches of flesh peeking through the back laces; the size 38 will leave about 2 inches. In this case, the 36 is more desirable for most ladies.
