blade runner A Review of Blade Runner and Other Sci-Fi Favorites A Review of Blade Runner and Other Sci-Fi Favorites By Morgan Hamilton When watching Blade Runner you should try not to compare the movie with the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? That’s a book written by the best science fiction writer of all time, Philip K. Dick. The mechanical pets are absent but there is a monologue discussing the absence of real animals in the future in the movie. I agree that the ending is quite different but this is necessary because of the different time and character development. It should be pointed out that Blade Runner features fine casting, good special effects and has a complex storyline and premise. All these aspects of the movie justice to Dock’s writing style and genius mind. Rachel played by the stunning Hollywood actress Sean Young fits perfectly in her stoic replicant/human role. Another famous actor taking part in the movie is Harrison Ford who with his smoky voice is a hunter seeking out the hiding replicants. The interesting role of Pris, a replicant ballerina, is played by Daryll Hannah. With amazing make up and costuming she gives a special touch to the movie. The soundtrack of the film couldn’t be better, it is utterly scintillating. It is a wonderful compilation of wailing wet sounds of the sax, drums and consistently expresses in Blues and Jazz which are romantic and surreal. This soundtrack relieves the epic, daunting and depressing bleakness of the reality of the future, just as the famous author Philip K. Dick has depicted it. The movie is frequently categorized in the cyberpunk genre-set. The main reason for this is because the action takes place in 2019 Los Angelis. There are cyber technology of cloning, hyped-up surveillance tools, and advanced investigative strategies. The latter are carried out by the Harrison Ford character, blade Runner Deckard. The director of this masterpiece is none other than Ridley Scott. He will always be remembered with such films as Andromeda Strain and blockbusters as Thelma and Louise and Gladiators. The movie is visually dark and you can even physically feel the darkness and the depression. The premise is true to the novel. The main plot is to show how precious human being and other life creatures are versus the technological displacement we face. Usually I would suggest you to read the book and then watch the movie but I retrain from offering you that as far as Blade Runner is concerned. As the comparison you will be making is going to interfere with your experience of this marvellous SF movie then don’t read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep first. Watch the film, one of the best of all times, and then read the book. After watching Blade Runner you will be flabbergasted at the details of the future life, mentality and morality. Amyl Nitrate is a side-project of Black Swan Insurgency that I find quite intoxicating. Richy X is a talented song writer who is motivated by the driving thud of technology and machinery much in the same way I am. The song ‘Accessoires’ draws something dark from deep inside of me, that dark something that draws me in and leads me to something beautiful. I find both Amyl Nitrate and Black Swan Insurgency very powerful, but feel maybe they have stereotyped American’s just a bit. At any rate, these two projects are well worth a listen. http://www.myspace.com/blackswaninsurgency http://www.myspace.com/amylnytrate

Big Gothic Hairstyles Techniques By Liza Lee big gothic hair Big gothic hairstyles since the eighties emphasized height or largely styled hair that is both romantic and mysterious. Crimping or curling and backcombing are the major ways to achieve such big hair for certain gothic hairstyles. Depending on the specific style, hairstyles in the big hair categories may require styling, cutting, or treatment techniques. Big gothic hair styles often requires backcombing or teasing and the liberal application of styling aids such as moulding mud, hair spray and hair gel, often in combination with the use of hair dryers. Crimping irons, curling irons, perms, hair rollers or other techniques may also be required for longer hair to help it stay big. If your hair is longer, the weight may make it difficult to achieve the desired volume. You’ll need to go to a salon and have your hair thinned or textured. With texturizing, your hairstylist is cutting fine wisps of hair at an angle into a variety of fine layers to remove the excessive weight. You will be amazed at how much of a difference it can make. Also, styling products such as a molding mud can provide volume, but beware of build-up as it takes away bounce and shine. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove the product residue. And longer hair must be trimmed regularly (every six weeks) to stay healthy and to prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft. If your hair is longer and really heavy, even with texturizing, a metal hair band can lift the hair from behind into a messy updo. You can conceal the hairpiece by styling hair around the hair band. This will give the illusion of added volume in the back as well as creating uneven lengths around for that classic Goth do. If you have shorter hair, you can skip the crimping or curling and just utilize backcombing with firm hold sprays, gels or other styling products to enhance a spiky style for a variety of gothic looks and styles. Gothic Dresses By Robert Panciera gothic dresses Gothic aesthetics is something that usually shocks others and is generally frowned upon, but little do those who do not understand it know that being goth is about this one thing: art. In today’s world, underground and more obscure types of culture, music, and fashion are very hard to come by due to its scarcity. Hot Topic is definitely the ‘biggest’ fashion store for gothic culture and other types of similar interests (yet the popularity is seldom). Goths are found here and about, but there are many people who wish to stick with more ‘mom and pop’ or ‘DIY” (Do It Yourself) type chains. Hot Topic, as well as other places in a big city may not be exactly what people are looking for due to price and availability of the desired gothic clothing; many have now started using the internet to search for gothic-related clothing and items for purchase rather than having only things in a normal store available to them. Finding these stores may be a bit hard for others due to the lack of them on the internet, but if you prefer to buy clothing, as well as other gothic related items, using a smaller mailorder type website is your best bet. ‘Big chainstore’ generally translates into, ‘big factories’ which means that the items you are buying are not usually paid attention to and given the detail that it requires to end up with a quality product. Finding quality gothic related clothing products for a good price is hard to come by at any given major chain store, so finding more of a smaller place is definitely your best bet for getting the quality product that you want for an even cheaper price than you’d pay in a store located in a mall. Gothic Clothes Styles – From Romantic Goth to Cybergoth By Liza Lee gothic clothing Traditional period Goth garb usually consists of mostly black clothing along with some white and are often accessorized with silver or pewter. The stereotypical gothic outfit sometimes referred to as the romantic look may include elaborate gowns and corsets, veils, full skirts, neck corsets, fishnets, lace and velvets. Also popular are tight-fitting trousers, pointy boots, flouncy poet or pirate shirts and footwear with buckles. I find the simplicity of traditional Goth style lends itself to variation, and is can be combined with fetish elements to give it a dark and romantic edge. Closely related to the Romantic (Victorian, Elizabethan, Renaissance) Goth style is the Gothic Lolita style that emerged from Japan, usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular with Gothic Lolitas and designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves and/or high-necked blouses. Some additions may include mini top hats, parasols, and lace headdresses. Most recently, Goth fashion has been infiltrated by forward-thinking styles that are more futuristic, science fiction and youthful. UV-reactive colors and materials, progressive fashions, huge shoes and boots, wild hair extensions using artificial materials, often with an undercut shave, goggles, cybernetics, androgyny, the influence of cyberpunk or anime themes and body modification are some of the elements of Cybergoth. A full-spectrum of bright or neon colors are an exciting addition to black. For example, a popular combination is black with hot pink, a flattering color for most skin tones. Of course, you can borrow elements of one or more gothic subcategory and sometimes this is dependant on the occasion. For gothic theme parties, you may combine elements of vintage, Victorian and fetish to create a costume that is intentionally spectacular and fantasy-oriented as an artistic display.
