Local DJ spotlight: DJ Bone - Oklahoma City

Local DJ spotlight: DJ Bone - Oklahoma City

We had a chance to interview DJ Bone and I think this is one of the best interviews we have ever put up. DJ Bone is a bright fellow who has a great ear for good music. So let's see what he had to say:

DFSM: How long have you been a DJ?
BONE: had to start with a question i don't have an exact answer to, so let me think. its been roughly 3 years i do believe.

DFSM: How did you decide that being a DJ was what you wanted to do?
BONE: a ha…this is a pretty much a "stumble into it" affair. i would go out to the wreck room's goth nights for years…one night the dj happened to get into an argument with management and got fired. the next week they had some other dj spinning house on goth night. i don't like house at all so i just got word out that i would take a stab at it. (thinking it would be just a short lived deal) so the next week i walked in with all the music i could muster and dove in head first. it was rough for a while…but i had people stick by me and give me pointers and so now…here i am still going strong.

DFSM: Do you have a favorite song in your set?
BONE: a favorite song? not really. songs all depend on my mood…and the mood of the crowd honestly. you can't be a good dj if you don't pay attention to the crowd. they feed off you and inversely you should be feeding off of their energy/reactions. i really do like to mix it up. i started as a strictly goth dj…but anymore i don't really like having any kind of title. i much prefer the whole "what is he gonna play next" attitude. keeps people guessing and keeps people from getting bored. and its great to just try to pull off things like mixing visage's "fade to gray" with MC Chris….classic.

DFSM: Out of all the clubs that you spin at which do you like the best?
BONE: there's honestly not many clubs i dislike spinning at. its not really about the club to me…the only thing the club does it hosts the party and provides equipment. The wreck room is where i got my start so it has a special little place in my heart. The conservatory is an awesome venue and i love it dearly. the staff is great. i love the management and they will work with me whenever possible to throw a party. but back to the question…the club only provides part of the deal. most of it really comes from the people who show up. no people no fun to dj…its kinda boring being in a club and spinning for no one.

DFSM: Do you DJ outside of Oklahoma? If so, where all have you gone?
BONE: yes. i have i've been to arkansas quite a few times and i've been in dallas also. thats about it outside of oklahoma. i've been to many many places in oklahoma city and tulsa…and even random places like sparks oklahoma to spin at synthfest a few years back. but i got back to it being more about the crowd than where you're actually spinning

click to enlargeDFSM: How regularly do you do events/shows?
BONE: I personally try to throw a show every couple of months at the conservatory but nothing is in the planning for there right now. The park does have me spin there the last thursday of the month. This month (on the 26 of october) will be the halloween edition of the event. its called sub:MERGE, trying to get the old school crowd to get out and mingle with the new school crowd so we can ultimately get the scene built up again. and i try to make the music reflect the time period ranging from the 80's to today. Another i have planned is for the psyclon 9 show. that one i open for psyclon 9, pittersplatter and bedlam emotion. its going to be quite the gritty show also (flyers below). being halloween soon i also have private parties im booked for so i won't go into those much. click to enlarge

DFSM: Do you think the oklahoma crowds respond well to your set? Do they feel the energy?
BONE: usually yes. i mean you always have people who aren't going to like it and expect you to play something they consider better. its hard to please everyone and i do the best that i can. but usually people react well and i try to keep up with them. so yes oklahoma crowds react really well when i spin. so does arkansas.

DFSM: Is there anything you'd like them to know when they are out on the dance floor? About you, or the music you choose?
BONE: there's plenty i like to say. i try to keep this information going out to people via myspace, email or in person. if you have advice or suggestions hit me up. don't simply come up to me and tell me you hate me if you do. its your opinion but it does no good without some sort of constructive advice. i always ask for requests. what people would like to hear etc. i try to stay on the front of music but there's just a lot of music out there that i end up going right by that i really should have. thats where people with requests send me back on the search. otherwise. i get stereotyped as a straight up gothic dj still. i've been trying to break that stereotype for a while. don't get me wrong. i still enjoy doing it on special events. and when its requested of me…but i like to be diverse and branch out into the electroclash, breakbeat, hip-hop scenes etc. not really for more exposure but i like to mix things up. keep it fresh and interesting. so ultimately. try one more time and see what bone has up his sleeve ;-)
