Hey, Everyone! Well, it’s spring/summer 2008 and you know that means! Events, contests, and shows!
This year Darkfaery Subculture/Darkspace is pleased to announce we will attending Soonercon ‘08 in a professional fashion. That’s right! After being in the hospital for most of last year I am back to work on hundreds of new projects and attending events is number one on my list. (Doing some of my own shows is second!)
If you are attending Soonercon, please come over to us and give a shout, it’s been a year or two since we were out with video and I have missed you guys. VNV Nation doesn’t really count since I was still sick and couldn’t socialize.
We’ll be taking photos and video so you guys who are always asking when we’ll be updating our gallery with fan photos and event photos now is your chance to get in them. There will be lots of events to choose from at Soonercon so if you are trying to nail us down look for us in costume at Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Masquerade Ball, Sinnercon Dance, and probably most of the kinky events, like the kinky meet-and-greet, complete with a performance by Wicked Harem Belly Dance from Tulsa. Plans include a workshop series on the ethics and etiquette of convention (not conventional) sex, frank discussions of alternative life/lovestyles, and erotic art how-to’s. Z wanted me to remind you we can be found at the gaming tables too. ![]()
If you can’t attend, don’t worry, I’ll post info on how you can watch our videos on cable, MySpace, and YouTube. If you do come out, don’t be afraid of the camera, it won’t be afraid of you!

About Soonercon
http://www.soonercon.info/
SoonerCon is a fan run multi-genre convention held annually in Oklahoma City.
If you’ve been around the Oklahoma City area for a while, the name may sound familiar. Here’s why. There used to be a club in Oklahoma City called STAR OKC. Like most fans, they wanted a convention. After putting on a few one-shot types in the late 1970s and early 1980s, these folks, mostly high-school age through just out of college youngsters, decided to get organized, work hard to raise some money, and try to get something started. SoonerCon 1 happened twenty one years ago, in June of 1986. The con was begun and ramrodded by the Chair of SoonerCon 1, Mike Hodge. What he and many other helpers achieved lasted through SoonerCon 13 in 1997. Lots of artist and writer guests, from Tim Powers and Gene Wolfe to Brad Foster and Robin Bailey, were welcomed to Oklahoma City. During those years SoonerCon had hundreds of staff and helpers, and up until the last few years SoonerCon was “owned” by STAR OKC.
With SoonerCon’s exclusive emphasis on traditional SF/fantasy books and art, making it a “lit con,” a move arose as well for a local charity “media con” emphasizing genre TV/film, comics, gaming and pop culture actors, designers, and other guests–especially from Star Trek. Thus was born ThunderCon, which debuted in June 2001, balancing SoonerCon’s November setting, and lasted through seven annual editions and often with staff and helpers working both. The new con operated with a non-profit board and involved all the local fan clubs interested, from Dr. Who, Babylon 5 and Trek’s Starfleet chapters to gaming, modelbuilding, real space and even Dark Shadows! With “BoomerCon” judged a little too cute for a sister event, this project was named in honor of both Oklahoma’s spring weather, its Indian heritage and the state’s heroic 45th Infantry Division, the Thunderbirds—and so ThunderCon was born, its logo even adapted from the 45th’s patch. ThunderCon was created and first run by another member of STAR OKC named Larry Nemecek, who with his wife Janet later moved to Hollywood to work on STAR TREK for Paramount. Yea, fanboys! A few other conventions have also taken place in the OKC area, but haven’t “taken root” for more than a year.

DFSM Exclusive audio interview with VNV Nation in Oklahoma City

We were lucky enough to be able to interview Ronan at their first show in oklahoma city, which was probably one of the greatest moments of my life. Meeting Robert Smith is really the only other thing that I can compare it too on my life chart.
We are having a little trouble with the video part of the interview so it might be a few days before I can post that, still in the mean time you can enjoy the audio format. I had a wonderful time at the show and VNV Nation are one of the coolest bands to see live. Ronan Harris is a very engaging, enigmatic performer and he encourages both the fans and his fellow band members to participate in the show. After almost dying this year, I was so glad to get out of the house and do something that kept me from dwelling on my illness, and if you haven’t seen VNV Nation live you need to go out there and find a show near you!

Local Spotlight: Tympanic Frenzy
Tympanic Frenzy have a rare sound that is truly original in a sea of bands that sound the same in oklahoma. I suggest you give them a listen without delay.
DFSM: Hey, it’s been awhile since we heard anything from Tympanic Frenzy, how is it going?
T.F.: Things are going well, since releasing Cerebral Funktion..In process… My brother Ryan has moved back from FL, and joined back up he’s doing some programming/writing and will be doing all the triggering and DJing for the live shows. Curtis has since left and
Been replaced by a new guitarist, Kenneth Murrey. So he’s been learning older material and helping finiish the new stuff.
DFSM: Any projects in the works?
T.F.:As for projects nothing new aside from Tympanic Frenzy. We’ve been working on the next album for a while now, and were a little more than half way through it. We might release some sort of remix ep of some older tracks to tide folks over till we get this finished. Were trying not to rush it We want every song to be solid, no filler tracks, we also have a bit of a theme going for this one so we’ll see how that works. (theres a rough draft of a new track up on the myspace page “Bloodstained”)
DFSM: Tympanic Frenzy has a very distinctive sound what is the inspiration behind it? What puts you in the mood?
T.F.: Well the inspiration is life mainly, everything thats brought me to this point (lyrically) the state of the world.. its not great you know and we try to make people think about that some and realize were all part of the problem. Rather than blaming try to look in the mirror. What gets me in the mood to write…? That varys, sometimes its hearing other peoples music, or a movie or just having the need I’m always thinking about making music. We inspire each other as well.

DFSM: Hello, Dirk, it’s been awhile since I had time to get an update with you, so what has been going on?
Dirk Hooper: There’s been a lot going on lately. Toxic Goddess is taking off. We only started a few months ago and we already have over 5200 photos on the site! We’re already looking into expanding into other fields (not ready to make those announcements yet, but believe me… it’s big)!
We’re currently making a big push to find and cultivate new models for the Toxic Goddess site. It’s tough to find the right women, because not only do they have to have the looks
and attitude, they also have to be creative, motivated, good at promotion and close enough that Robert Henry, Jennifer Marks and I can work with them regularly. But the potential rewards, for the right women, is great!
I can make the announcement that we’re also looking for an apprentice makeup artist to help with shoots and we’re ALWAYS looking for unique places to shoot (heck, we’re looking for almost any place to shoot).
Personally, I’ve had a good year as a fine artist. I had work at the Dirty Show in Detroit, got three pieces in the IAO’s Biting the Apple exhibit and recently had a month long group show in Dallas. Earlier this year my work was acquired by the Kinsey Institute, based at Indiana University, for their permanent collection, which is both exciting and a great honor. My work will now be preserved and studied by future generations.
DFSM: Do you have any events or shows coming up in the next few months?
Dirk Hooper: Again, we’re looking into some big things with appearances next year, but I’ll give you an exclusive… I’ve been invited as a guest artist to a fetish show in Belgium next March!
DFSM: How many Toxic Goddesses are there now? I see lots of new faces.
Dirk Hooper: We currently have eight Toxic Goddesses (one that will debut in November), but we are making a big push to bring some new models on board, and we are very close to ascending several new Goddesses.

DFSM: Hey, AG, it’s been forever since we did an update with you, how are things going?
AG: Really great.I finally got out of poverty long enough to get a decent internet connection. Now I am getting some of my stuff out and meeting other producer/dj/musicians.Love is more important than money to me and i’m getting a lotta love out here.
DFSM: Are you working on any projects right now?
AG: yes. i am developing an experimental goth rock album using guitar samples.i also have an acid revival cd in the works.
i am looking to develop and produce rap tracks(i have a few beats already)and also looking to score short and feature length films.
DFSM: AG, we have been friends for almost 20 years now, and in all that time you have written thousands of awesome songs for me to groove too, how would you say your style has changed in all that time?
AG: the basic elements of the craft that i learned from listening to hours of old school 80’s and rave, like song structure and exploitation of cheap technology stay the same.technology has allowed me to use what i learned in the old tape decks and casios days and apply it to the even cheaper computer based sequencing systems.i love all forms of music and encourage artists to follow their own path.don’t let snobs tell you your methods are wrong.prove THEM wrong.in the end my goal is to hopefully create the kind of magical tunes i grew up raving to.my music is a tribute retro electronica and goth
DFSM: Aside from all that where online can our readers find your music to haunt them?
