FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Contact Person: Duvall Gilchrist-Montgomery Company Name: Darkfaery Subculture Magazine Email Address: duvy.dfsm@gmail.com Web site address: http://www.darkfaery-subculture.com Oklahoma City, OK February 1, 2010 Darkfaery Subculture Magazine and Darkfaery Girls are looking for independent clothing designers and crafters to feature in an upcoming issue, we will consider anyone that is genre based but we would prefer those that have Etsy shops or sell their craft from home. The Darkfaery Girls would like to have their photos taken for their bios and event photos wearing your creations. If you design costumes or rare items we would love to see your creations in our magazine on our models. We would really like to help creators that don’t have access to models or published works, this meets with our mission statement and we feel as if we are helping the art community. Through the years it has been DFSM’s mission to bring together the underground music, art, and fashion scenes that have, in the past, tried to remain exclusive and reclusive unto themselves. DFSM is committed to stamping out pretension among the genres so that fans and industry professionals can come together to create something memorable, and darkly beautiful, for years to come. DFSM reflects a unique lifestyle which both its readers and publishers strive to be a part of. Featuring and attending local events, conventions, and fairs, DFSM continues to transcend the labels and prejudices placed upon the freakish, interesting, weird world upon which we live. Our magazine is distributed worldwide and free online from various publishing outlets, including our website. We have several ways we can offer to promote your business or idea. We attend, create, and sponsor many big name events throughout the year where we put together a promo pack of flyers, sticks, business cards, and items that we give away as a gift bag. We have found that this is a great source for us and for our readers to find services and products that might be of interest to them. We would like to invite you to take advantage of this with us by sending us your materials and/or linking with us as partners. If you would like to view a sample of our magazine you can find it free online: http://www.darkfaery-subculture.com http://issuu.com/darkfaerysubculture/docs/dfsm-magcloud ### february 2010

Dubbed the “masters of mope rock,” the Cure rose from Britain’s late-’70s punk scene to become one of the biggest-selling “underground” acts of the 1980s. Frontman Robert Smith, who has been described as the “messiah of melancholy” and the “guru of gloom,” is known for wearing death-white facial makeup, crimson lipstick, and teased black hair; he is rivaled only by Morrissey as a heartthrob for the discontented. The Cure’s goth-pop style is characterized by self-obsessed lyrics, minor-key melodies, and Smith’s distinctive vocal whine. Robert Smith grew up in working-class Crawley, Sussex, a suburb of London. He recalls his childhood years as difficult, a time of run-ins with his parents and the law. At 17 he formed the Easy Cure with childhood friends Laurence Tolhurst and Michael Dempsey as a sort of catharsis for his feelings of frustration. The group’s music has remained therapeutic for Smith. The Cure made its initial splash in the U.K. with the 1979 single “Killing an Arab,” which stirred controversy when it reappeared on the mid-’80s retrospective Standing on a Beach: The Singles. Some U.S. radio DJs used the song, which was inspired by Albert Camus’ The Stranger, to advance anti-Arab sentiments; the group included a disclaimer with subsequent pressings stating that the song “decries the existence of all prejudice and consequent violence.” While the Cure toured in 1979 as the support act to Siouxsie and the Banshees, the headliner’s guitarist quit the band. Smith was recruited to fill in on the tour, beginning an active collaboration with the Banshees. He ultimately devoted much of 1983–84 as a full-time member of the band, recording both the live Nocturne and a studio album, Hyaena. In 1983, he also joined Banshees bassist Steve Severin for a side project called the Glove, releasing one album, Blue Sunshine. When Smith once again devoted himself to the Cure, the music evolved from the sparse punk pop of that song and other early singles (“Boys Don’t Cry,” “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” “The Lovecats”) to the dirgy, moody music of Faith and Seventeen Seconds, to the more focused hits on the later albums Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Disintegration, and Wish. While the Cure had been a top hit-making indie band in the U.K. since the early-80s, it wasn’t until the release of Standing on a Beach (and its CD-only counterpart, Staring at the Sea) (Number 48, 1986) that the band moved beyond its cult status in the U.S. The double-album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (Number 35) debuted in June 1987, spawning the minor hits “Why Can’t I Be You?” (Number 54, 1987), “Just Like Heaven” (Number 40, 1987), and “Hot Hot Hot!!!” (Number 65, 1988). In 1989, Disintegration reached Number 12 and included the group’s biggest hit yet, “Love Song” (Number Two). Wish is the band’s most successful album to date, reaching Number Two and including the surprisingly upbeat “Friday I’m in Love” (Number 18). The subsequent tour was documented on record and a film, both titled Show (an additional live collection, Paris, culled from the same tour was also released in 1993). In 1996 the Cure released Wild Mood Swings (Number 12), which attempted to broaden the band’s sound to include a track of Latin-flavored pop, earning mostly negative reviews, and with “The 13th” (Number 44) its highest-charting single. Another best-of, Galore (Number 32), followed in 1997. Three years later, Smith unveiled the Cure’s best-reviewed album in years, Bloodflowers (Number 16, 2000), the third part of a trilogy they began with Pornography and Disintegration. That same year, the Cure launched a world tour by announcing it would be the band’s last. But Smith soon began to hedge on that promise, saying all the subsequent attention and sudden acclaim made him strangely…happy. In 2001, the band released a greatest hits album and DVD on Polydor and toured extensively, doing a series of performances of Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers for a set of DVDs, The Cure: Trilogy, released in 2003. The following year, the band released a four-disc, seventy-song boxed set, Join the Dots: B-Sides and Rarities, 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years) (Number 106, 2004). Meanwhile, the Cure signed with Geffen Records and began its new life on the label with an album titled simply The Cure (Number 7, 2004). That year, MTV honored the band with its Icon award. In 2005, the Cure recorded a version of John Lennon’s “Love” for an Amnesty International charity album. In October 2008, the Cure released their thirteenth studio album, 4:13 Dream.

As the solo project GothiCello, Gerald Nicks is striving for a unique fusion of styles from Ethno Gothic and Industrial to Dark Jazz and Heavy Classical. GothiCello is creating music to raise the dead and calm the lost souls. Besides his primary instrument, a Ned Steinberger 5 string electric cello, Gerald plays piano, Native American flute, electronic and acoustic percussion, and sings. Why this name? Basically from “Gothic” and “Cello”, since no one snagged it. I’ve wanted to play electric cello for the longest time, so I am finally doing it and having a blast! Do you play live? GothiCello is primarily a home-studio project, although I’ve been known to haunt local art & music free-for-alls. How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry? Access to great music any time anywhere by anyone. No longer must you be a superstar for your unique music to be heard. Would you still sign a record contract with a major label? I like total control over my artistic expression. I can still produce my own CDs and sell them on a label like Projekt. Band History: It started out as just dinkin around placing snippets on the ZeD site. Then I found MySpace and started getting more serious, producing a full-length song. So many song ideas, so little time. Your influences? Basically most bands on the Projekt and early 4ad labels. Dead Can Dance, Lycia, Fields of the Nephilim, The Cult, Cruxshadows, Arcana, Apocalyptica, Jill Tracy, Jami Sieber, Marston Smith, Johnny Cash, Unto Ashes, Rajna, Legion Within, Rob Zombie, Midnight Syndicate. I am inspired by graveyards, their smell, the wonderful grave angels, the untold stories from really old grave markers, and mausoleums to drool over. I am inspired by the depth of emotions that I can express from my personal experience. Other wonderful mutli-talented artists inpire me to go beyond and really stretch myself. Favorite spot? Colma, CA. The city of the dead! Equipment used: A GNX3 guitar effects board to record 5 string e-cello, guitar, vocals, Roland Handsonic, and voice. Guitar Tracks Pro to mix down. I have been dinkin around with Propellerhead’s Reason too. Anything else…? Sounds Like: Contemplative, expressive, and eclectic, the sound can remind one of soulful New Orleans dark-jazz and blues, bombastic classical musings, or peacefully hypnotic grooves to meditate by. http://www.myspace.com/gothicello

Gothic Dresses By Robert Panciera Gothic aesthetics is something that usually shocks others and is generally frowned upon, but little do those who do not understand it know that being goth is about this one thing: art. In today’s world, underground and more obscure types of culture, music, and fashion are very hard to come by due to its scarcity. Hot Topic is definitely the ‘biggest’ fashion store for gothic culture and other types of similar interests (yet the popularity is seldom). Goths are found here and about, but there are many people who wish to stick with more ‘mom and pop’ or ‘DIY” (Do It Yourself) type chains. Hot Topic, as well as other places in a big city may not be exactly what people are looking for due to price and availability of the desired gothic clothing; many have now started using the internet to search for gothic-related clothing and items for purchase rather than having only things in a normal store available to them. Finding these stores may be a bit hard for others due to the lack of them on the internet, but if you prefer to buy clothing, as well as other gothic related items, using a smaller mailorder type website is your best bet. ‘Big chainstore’ generally translates into, ‘big factories’ which means that the items you are buying are not usually paid attention to and given the detail that it requires to end up with a quality product. Finding quality gothic related clothing products for a good price is hard to come by at any given major chain store, so finding more of a smaller place is definitely your best bet for getting the quality product that you want for an even cheaper price than you’d pay in a store located in a mall. Click here for more information on finding the store that suits your needs for gothic clothing

Gothic Clothes Styles – From Romantic Goth to Cybergoth By Liza Lee Traditional period Goth garb usually consists of mostly black clothing along with some white and are often accessorized with silver or pewter. The stereotypical gothic outfit sometimes referred to as the romantic look may include elaborate gowns and corsets, veils, full skirts, neck corsets, fishnets, lace and velvets. Also popular are tight-fitting trousers, pointy boots, flouncy poet or pirate shirts and footwear with buckles. I find the simplicity of traditional Goth style lends itself to variation, and is can be combined with fetish elements to give it a dark and romantic edge. Closely related to the Romantic (Victorian, Elizabethan, Renaissance) Goth style is the Gothic Lolita style that emerged from Japan, usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular with Gothic Lolitas and designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves and/or high-necked blouses. Some additions may include mini top hats, parasols, and lace headdresses. Most recently, Goth fashion has been infiltrated by forward-thinking styles that are more futuristic, science fiction and youthful. UV-reactive colors and materials, progressive fashions, huge shoes and boots, wild hair extensions using artificial materials, often with an undercut shave, goggles, cybernetics, androgyny, the influence of cyberpunk or anime themes and body modification are some of the elements of Cybergoth. A full-spectrum of bright or neon colors are an exciting addition to black. For example, a popular combination is black with hot pink, a flattering color for most skin tones. Of course, you can borrow elements of one or more gothic subcategory and sometimes this is dependant on the occasion. For gothic theme parties, you may combine elements of vintage, Victorian and fetish to create a costume that is intentionally spectacular and fantasy-oriented as an artistic display.
