Hello, all. It’s been several months since I did a wrap up
article and since then so much has changed. This year has seen Darkfaery
covering a lot of great events. I haven’t been keeping our friends, fans, and
readers as up to date as I should and for that I am very sorry. If you haven’t
heard yet, we face some tragedies over the last few months. The house where Z
and I live, which also serves as our home office, was pounded with rare large
hail balls. Most of our staff was here at the time and they also suffered damage
to their cars and emotions in ways I can begin to explain. Soon after the hail
storm Oklahoma City was hit with a flood and it became apparent that the tarps
on our roof were not going to hold so our house was also flooded from above.

We don’t qualify for any kind of aid or help from local or federal government so we’re
scraping by to come up with the $32,000 in damages ourselves. As such, we won’t
be able to put the magazine in stores for another year or so.

Our number of volunteers has dropped slightly and we haven’t had any new recruits for a few
months, but we are always eager to bring in new people. We can’t expand without
fresh faces and radical new ideas, so if you have any we’d love for you to join
our group.

In better news, we’ve had a lot of fun with what we have accomplished. Events we have been
a part of were largely successful. Among them you can count Underground Horror
fest 1, Night of the Fallen Angels, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Rock and Roll
Garage Sale, and Soonercon as great experiences.
We’ve met a lot of cool people this year who have been very supportive
of our endeavors and we hope this sort of above and beyond support continues
while we regroup and try to get our shit together.

I may sound a little fatal, but really we have the rest of the year to go and still quite a
few events to get through. The next convention we are a part of is Oklahoma
Horror Film Fest. The Festival will be held at Tulsa’s Spirit Bank Event Center
located in the Regal Plaza off Memorial between 101st and 111th. You can find
more info at

http://www.oklahomahorrorfilmfest.com/

In a few days to a week issue five will go on sale on our website. We are just two issues away
from our 1 year return to print anniversary. I hope you are enjoying all the
hard work we have put into this magazine. Believe me when I say it isn’t as easy
as it looks.

I know we usually have our October schedule completed by
now, but we have made no commitments for October, if you’d like us to make a
guest appearance or have the Darkfaery girls whip something up for your
Halloween events please let us know ASAP because October fills up fast for us.
We usually have events every weekend in October and occasionally during the
week, so don’t hesitate to bring us in on new things. We are kind of getting
burned out on the same old schedule.

I wanted to bring to light a few things that have been mentioned to me lately and see if I
can’t address some comments. Our free online PDF version has a lot of readers
from all over the world that makes it hard for us to just show up at your
concert or venue by receiving e-vites. A few people have commented to me that
they send me electronic invitations all the time and yet Darkfaery has never
been to a show, done a review or made any attempt. If you don’t send me a
personal invite asking me to bring the DFGs or attend as the magazine I don’t
think of it as anything other than a mass invitation. Otherwise, it just sits
with the other 7,000 event invites on MySpace and Facebook that I don’t want to
deal with. We are not snubbing you, ask us like we matter.

Having said all this I’d like to thank the people who support us and offer us booth space or
stage time or promotional materials or just anything that you have done to help
us exist. All we want is to keep doing what we love and keep you doing what you
love. So do what you love and love what you do, why would you do anything else?

7 Things to Do at a Horror Convention By Carma Spence Every year there are dozens (if not more) horror conventions taking place around the country. There is the annual World Horror Convention, Horrorfind holds a couple each year, and several haunt and horror organizations hold regular conventions. So what can you do at a horror convention? Here are some ideas. 1. Learn new things. Many conventions feature panel discussions, workshops, seminars and guest talks. Horror conventions are no different. You could learn about an upcoming film, the back story of your favorite director or even some special effects makeup techniques. 2. Take in an art show. Do you enjoy dark art? Many horror conventions feature an art show with horror art on display. Some of the art is professionally done, some may be fan art. Either way it could be enjoyable see the “dark” side of art. 3. Add to your autograph collection. Often times the guests of honor will have time set aside during the convention to sign autographs. Bring along your own image or buy one there… this is your opportunity to get up close and share your admiration for your favorite actor, author or other horror professional’s work. 4. Buy cool stuff. What convention would be without the Dealer’s room? Here you’ll find collectibles, costuming supplies and even irreverent T-shirts. If it has to do with horror and someone is willing to sell it, you’ll be sure to find it in the Dealer’s room. 5. Meet authors, actors and special effects artists. Sometimes you’ll find these people in the Dealer’s room, sometimes there will be a room dedicated to these “workhorses” of the horror field. More often than not, you’ll be able to strike up an interesting conversation with someone who either illustrated your favorite horror comic, did the make up in your favorite movie or even played one of the characters in that horror film that kept you up for several nights after seeing it. 6. Dance the night away. If the convention lasts more than one day, there will often be a dance party planned for either Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes the party is come as you are, other times costumes are encouraged. Either way, you can dance the night away with like-minded horror fans. 7. Play dress up. Although you are more than welcome to attend a horror convention in street clothes, you are also very welcome to pretend it’s Halloween and arrive in costume. Obviously, since this is a horror convention, a scary costume will work much better than something less frightening. Keep in mind that each convention will have its own flavor, so all the above activities may not be available at any given convention… then again, activities not mentioned above very well could be. If nothing else, check out what the convention has to offer and have a good time! Howl’s Moving Castle – Among the Best Anime By Andrius Lap Entertaining, challenging and thought upsetting, Howl’s Moving Castle is probably not the very best movie ever launched, but it’s easily among the best of the year. The movie opens with the eponymous citadel of the title parting the mists of the Waste in a simple, yet breathtaking introduction. The castle doesn’t do anything in this opening sequence but transfer, but boy, the way it moves! A complex conglomerate of disparate parts working together in a frenzy of kinetic vitality, the fort is almost Rube Goldbergian in its complexity, setting the stage nicely for the wealthy tale of magic to come. The castle belongs to the type-hearted however self-absorbed wizard Howl, who wanders the Waste in his citadel in the vain hope of avoiding involvement in his country’s lengthy-working warfare with a neighboring state. Throughout certainly one of his brief forays into a metropolis, Howl pauses momentarily to rescue a young woman named Sophie from the unwanted attentions of a pair of amorous soldiers. This, unfortunately, brings Sophie to the attention of the vindictive Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie right into a ninety-12 months-outdated woman out of spite for Howl. Determined to interrupt the curse, Sophie hobbles into the Waste hoping to discover a wizard or witch willing to restore her to her former age. She finds herself employed on as housekeeper for Howl and his pig-sty of a fortress after which, as they say, the fun really begins. Miyazaki infuses the movie with two foremost themes common to his other films: condemnation of the futility of battle, and religion in the transformative power of love. The continuing war – although unwell-outlined within the narrative – continues to grow and steadily attracts even Howl into the fray, despite his greatest efforts. Fleets of winged airships battle high over the land, and their bombing runs on the cities are so stark and graphic they recall in mind scenes from Miyazaki collaborator Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. Shapeshifting wizards that started preventing earlier on in the battle have misplaced all traces of their humanity, changing into ugly, flying toad-like beings, and Howl himself is at risk of shedding himself to a daunting hen-of-prey form. It is Sophie who intervenes, saving Howl from his determined course of self-destruction, and their emotions for each other develop despite the apparent distinction in age. It’s a state of affairs that will be acquainted to anybody who’s seen Miyazaki’s previous efforts, besides the director manages to tug it off for essentially the most part. The battle, being undefined, lacks the substance that made the conflicts in Nausica of the Valley of the Wind, Castle within the Sky or Princess Mononoke so effective. There’s quite a lot of flash and bang, yes, but no real that means behind the carnage. When Madam Suliman acknowledges the pointlessness of the battle and brings her vast powers into play to try to bring it to an end, she all of the sudden turns into the biggest villain of the piece – in retrospect – for perpetuating the battle for so long. As shifting as the film is, nevertheless, it isn’t without some vital flaws. Most irritating is the truth that whereas each magical being Sophie meets recognizes that she’s below a spell, none of them make any effort to help free her. And despite this lack of assist, because the movie wears on the curse appears to lose its power over Sophie at random intervals, a growth that goes unnoticed by the characters and unexplained by the film. There’s a complete lot that works on this movie. The world Howl inhabits might simply be an early 20th century analog of Austria or any number of imperial European international locations, lush with pomp and circumstance. The steampunk confection of expertise and magic is a giddy combine, and the steadiness struck feels strong and proper. Avatar: The Last Airbender is the most popular anime of all times and if you would like to know more or see Avatar The Last Airbender Toys please visit our website: www.avatarthelastairbendertoys.com

Steampunk Nerf – Who’s Behind These Cool Painted Nerf Guns? By Jerry Benson For those of you that are into Nerf, you probably have noticed a movement has slowly been taking place. This movement deals with some curious painted Nerf guns. Chances are you’ve seen them while browsing Google Images, Flickr, or forums like NerfHaven. Many of us have gawked at these amazingly painted Nerf guns, while knowing very little about them in general, and believing that they were just some creation made by a very skilled craftsman going by the alias of Steampunk. I made that mistake as well. Up until now, I thought it was a person and was amazed at how much recognition he was getting everywhere, especially on mega-popular sites like Gizmodo and Boing Boing…After taking a good look though, at what Steampunk actually is, I’ve come to realize that there is much more to this movement than meets the eye. It happens to be very deep. I quickly found that it is in fact, not a person, and instead a type of science fiction, the kind that comes complete with a massive amount of dedicated fans, conventions, costumes, and a heavy slew of mods done to everyday items such as computers, jewelry, watches, and… books. There are even books written about Steampunk, and even tutorials on how to create a Steampunk style computer keyboard (which is uber cool if I do say so myself). One thing is for sure, this movement is popular, and its made its way into Nerf. It has annihilated forums, swept across Flickr, and jumped onto youtube. Every day it’s becoming a more prominent part of the culture that has surrounded Nerf. You can see more on this incredible movement, and learn exactly what it is here – Steampunk Nerf, where you’ll see prime examples of Nerf guns styled to fit this amazing genre of Sci-Fi. They are pretty incredible, so be sure to visit the link and check them out!

Current Darkfaery Happenings april/may/june/july 2010 Here we are, four months into the New Year. We have a lot of great stuff coming up and I wanted to let everyone know where Darkfaery Subculture Magazine is right now. I know things have seemed really quiet but there actually is a lot going on behind the scenes. Issue 3 is due out on May 30th we moved the date up a few days because we have to get ready for SoonerCon on June 4th, 5th, and 6th. As you know, SoonerCon is one of my favorite conventions and every year we look forward to being a part of it.   I want to personally thank the people who are working hard to donate time and effort to help keep us afloat during the transition from web to print and finally into stores across the US. It is a bit of a difficult process as companies and stores ask us to change things like format and volume. We have to make decisions on whether we want to censor or plastic bag every issue. It is a fine line and requires a lot of money and volunteers. I don’t want those people to feel like their time is wasted, so props to them. I have decided we will not be a part of any events during August and September. If you are trying to get us on board for any reason during those two months we will be working hard behind the scenes and will not have time to sponsor or attend anything. We are jumping right back in for October; it wouldn’t be October without the Haunticon Ball now in its 3rd year. This year’s Haunticon Ball also marks one year that we have been back in print. We have had a lot of offers for venues in Tulsa, but we think we’d like to bring it back to Oklahoma City again this year.   Since that is months away I will return to the present, currently we are getting prepared for The Oklahoma Electronic Game Expo (OEGE) which is a one-day celebration of videogames and associated technology hosted at Oklahoma City Community College. We are very glad to be media partners with this event. It is free and open to the public and will include a variety of exhibitors, guest speakers, lectures, coding challenges, and game tournaments. There is still time to get yourself involved in this event. We do need volunteers, they need volunteers, there is still booth space available and just look at the list of people involved in this shindig already Arcade Sales & Rentals, Best Buy, Brett Weiss, Darkfaery Subculture Magazine, Felix Matos, Hardcore LAN Center, Mana Bomb Game Studio, New World Comics, Pyralis Entertainment, and Vintage Stock with more folks joining every day.  http://oege.gamesok.org You can keep up with our schedule at : http://www.darkfaery-subculture.com More info: OEGE http://oege.gamesok.org/ Carnality Ball http://www.carnalityball.com/ SoonerCon http://www.soonercon.com/ Underground Horror Fest http://www.facebook.com/pages/Underground-Horror-Fest/190558545756?ref =ts Assimilation Tulsa http://www.facebook.com/assimilationtulsa?ref=mf
