Making Flyers (For Beginners)
By Janice Jenkins

Although many business owners nowadays are converting to online marketing to promote their products and services, print collaterals such as flyers still have their appeal to most entrepreneurs.

Traditional marketers still go for custom flyers as time-tested strategies to market their merchandise. The way they’ve always done it is to hand out their print flyers to their target clients, hoping that the design and layout gets the attention of the recipients.
As marketing collateral goes, full color flyers are highly popular not only because they’re simple and cost effective; custom flyers are the print materials that can help you get up close and personal with your clients. In fact, they are the closest you can get your message to your target clients, without having to discriminate.

So whatever merchandise or item you’re selling, or if you’re opening a new business, a color flyer is one of the most cost effective marketing collateral that you can use for your retail business.

Here’s how you can create your very own custom flyer printing:

Step 1: Choose the color of your paper.

You might go traditional and opt for white. But if you want to be unusual and out-of-the-ordinary, choose colored paper for your flyers. The most popular colors are light pink, light blue, yellow, and light green. And if you are bold, try bright pink, electric blue or even shocking orange.

The trick is to create a good contrast between your paper and your graphics and text. If you’re planning on using bright colors for your paper, choose lighter shades on your graphics and typeface.

Step 2: Develop a snappy and catchy headline.

In addition to your graphics and design, your headline is the only time that you can really capture the attention of your audience. Provide a catchy headline and hook them with powerful descriptive words that sum up your merchandise.

Don’t forget: be simple, clear and concise.

Step 3: Add your graphics.

There are available graphics and clip art in your design software program. All you have to do is pick one or two that can emphasize what you have to say in your custom flyer.

But be sure to keep your graphics simple. You wouldn’t want to distract your clients’ attention to what is more important – your message.

Or if you’re on a tight budget, printing costs can be cut down by using your text and the typeface. Even your font can be your graphic design.

Step 4: Write your copy.

Your flyer copy should be straightforward and direct to the point. You can’t afford to go on and on with very limited space in your color flyers. Don’t waste your time and your clients’ time with too many words. Use simple everyday words to make your message clear.

Step 5: Have your color flyers printed.

Step 6: And you’re done.

Band to Watch – Silence of a Silhouette
By Kimberly Wolford

Cleveland, Ohio has always been associated with greatness: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Drew Carey, Lebron James and the list just goes on. Well, chalk up another tally for Cleveland with the alternative rock quintet Silence of a Silhouette. The band has already made quite a splash on Myspace and even performed on the Ernie Ball stage at the Vans’ Warped Tour this year.

Andy (lead guitar), Jeff H (guitar/keyboards/backup vocals), Jeff K (drums), Justin (bass) and vocalist Danny make up the lineup for this up and coming rock sensation. The guys have each separately thought about being professional musicians, but it wasn’t until they were all together that they decided to make their dream become a reality. I, along with legions of dedicated fans, think that was a very good decision. Silence of a Silhouette. Hmmm… now that’s an interesting name. According to guitarist Andy, Jeff and Danny are the creators of the name, “Well Dan and Jeff were reading a book and in the book it said Ashes of a Silhouette and for some reason Dan thought instead of ashes it should be silence.” That name has since stuck but fans know them better as simply “S-O-S.”

Cleveland is not just the home base for this band. The guys actually love to play there too. With so many choices of venues, who wouldn’t want to play in Cleveland? Notable places for Silence of a Silhouette include the Agora Ballroom and the Grog Shop. Silence of a Silhouette also just finished a partial tour with the Vans’ Warped Tour this summer. They had the opportunity of playing on the Ernie Ball stage and experienced a taste of what is soon to be their future.

The music of Silence of a Silhouette is characterized by driving guitar riffs and memorable beats. “Pandora’s Box” being a key example of this. “…Pandora is actually our favorite to play normally it’s got that catchy beat to it and when it gets into that breakdown I just go crazy…” says Andy. But don’t get to thinking that Silence of a Silhouette is just like any other budding rock band out there; the guys signed with a management group in 2007, which changed a lot for the group. Andy says, “It things changed drastically. Although our contract just ended, the time we were with them was awesome. Between getting awesome press, pictures, shows, and merchandise, we really expanded.” He goes on to add; “I think the main thing that separates us from anyone out there is our energetic stage performance. It’s almost like a war zone between us band mates when we get on stage. We are swinging guitars, microphones, stage diving, or some kind of crazy antic for the fans to enjoy”

Silence of a Silhouette’s new album Escaping Reality is available on iTunes, Amazon, and their own online merchandise store, which is accessible through their Myspace page: www.myspace.com/silenceofasilhoette. All I can say is that the world better prepare themselves. Silence of a Silhouette is pumped and has a long and bright future ahead of them. Andy closed the interview with a few words for all the Silence of a Silhouette fans out there, “The one thing from the bottom of all our hearts is that we love our fans. If it wasn’t for them we would still be at step one.”

FLV Video Share Sites Streamline Band and Music Promotion
By Randy Penn

Streamline your marketing and promotion with niche streaming web sites. The amazing onlinetv rage is right here and growing. Internet marketing attention is focused on broadband streaming media and nothing could be better for your music than a slice of that attention. This is a marriage made in heaven streaming media and music video.

With the free, built into Microsoft, Movie Maker most everyone can take their audio file and with a little creativity make it into a compelling video. Music videos are no longer a barrier for bands to take advantage of the onlinetv revolution. Just pop some cool pictures or some video shorts from your mini-cam, lay in your audio tracks and viola! You have made a simple music video to get that song out. A video with title, credits, lyrics and a message where viewers can buy it will more than suffice as a promotional tool. Don’t forget “Where is the next gig?”

Who has not heard of youtube or google video? These amazing amalgams of everything under the sun stand as monolithic compendiums. There must be more than 100 million videos on these sites containing an inexhaustible variety of material covering every topic under the sun. This makes them the world’s largest central repository for video. Like a dictionary containing every word it has the drawback it cannot be read even if using an index to find something. If you are not the most popular or the featured few darlings your message never sees the light of day, except by you. Google’s top 100 videos are populated with soft porn girlies and that is hard to compete with.

Never let it be said that having your music video on Youtube or Google should not be done. Au contrairy, that is the first thing you would do followed by posting that video to your MySpace account. What did you say? You don’t have a MySpace account? Then go get an account now! The accounts are free, easy and worth the effort. Move! Get back here when you are done baking that cake.

Now it is time to put some frosting on your cake. Frosting for this project is exemplified with a video share site like MusicTV Video Share. A shared video website designed with a specific focus on music. This is the oldest site streaming on the Internet. Even before Real or Microsoft had streaming software MusicTV.com was broadcasting live bands from New York City and London using its own software. Every week over 20 concerts of independent bands were broadcast live and then archived on the Internet. Amazing! Even Keane played for MusicTV! While they no longer stream live they have put up a new video-sharing site that offers almost all the features of Youtube as well as the name and heritage (page ranking!) of MusicTV. The video share site is now only weeks old so you have an opportunity to rule the front page and the search engine results!

You can download your YouTube flv file using Vixy website saving time to upload with the smaller flv file, or simply upload your original (under 100meg) right onto the MusicTV servers. The service handles the conversion of most formats if you do not have an flv file. You will end up with an embeddable flv video as well as a URL for places that do not let you embed or email! The page is a perma-link home for the song that can be attached to your “group” at MusicTV Video Share. The offered code works in MySpace, Blogger and just about all the web sites that allow embed code. MusicTV Video Share has community resources that include; your own personal profile, messaging, friends, favorites, play lists, groups and other tools to help you expand your fan base. You can use the community by populating your profile with your music videos, pictures, and information while you form a group using your band name to gather new fans. It works. You can then send email to your friends directly from your account at MusicTV. It is all simple and easy.

MusicTV.com has always worked for the independent musician and labels. Independent labels are invited to form groups and showcase their bands. There is a special program for selling your CD’s or downloads through http://www.VideoSeconds.com/ the online DVD and audio CD sales outlet available on MusicTV Video Share.

The important thing is to get you onto these sites when they start and are fresh. MusicTV Video Share is new and will launch out in full this September. You have the opportunity to be the first there and that means front page! Google cache!

Niche streaming is the future and finding a place where you can stand out within your niche gets more difficult each day. You will see more niche streaming sites growing out as the proliferation of site offerings becomes overwhelming. Finding the bests sites to get your music heard and seen will be of great significance. When the next big wave comes are you ready to ride it? Get on http://www.MusicTV.com/share so I can see you already!

Make Your Own Beats, Tracks, or Complete Demo CDs… And Make Money
Doing It!
by Matthew Keith

Many people are making an excellent living selling thier samples,
tracks, and cd’s, on the Internet and off, even if they’re not with a
major record label. Just look around on the Internet. People are paying
$30 to $60 for small beat and and sound packages, $50 to $100 for small
loopsets and beatsets, $100 to $300 for Instrumentals, $100’s to
$1,000’s for complete tracks and samples, and for the few lucky ones
like Jay-Z and J D… “Money aint a Thing”! They sell millions of their
cd’s. There are thousands of people and even companies looking for new
music everyday! Let them hear yours!

Whether you dream of Making It Big in the Music Industry, or are just
interested in making some extra cash doing what you love, this article
is for you. You will see the resources you need to make your own beats,
loops, instrumentals, finished tracks, and complete demo cd’s. You will
also see the resources you need to make money doing it. With that being
said, let’s get to the part you are waiting for…

Part I: Make Your Own Beats, Instrumentals, Samples, Loops, Tracks, and
Complete Demo CDs…

To do this, you will need a few things. First you will need recording
studio software. Recording studio software is nothing more than a
program that allows you to mix beats, melodies, chords, samples and
loops to make your own customized instrumentals and tracks. They also
allow you to record yourself as you sing or rap to your track and to
make a copy of your tracks to cd.

You can find this type of software all over the Internet. Just do a
search for “make your own beats” or “recording studio software”. As you
search, you will notice that on average, this type of software will run
you between $50 and $200. Don’t Buy Them (you’ll see why shortly)! Now
you’re going to need beats, melodies, chords, samples, and loops to
customize with your recording studio software, aka: soundsets and
loopsets. Again, just do a search for “beats” or “loops”. They usually
come in packages of about 200 soundsets for $30 and 300 loopsets for
$60, or 600 soundsets for $75 and 900 loopsets for $150. Don’t Buy Them
Either!

Alright, so at the minimum, $140 gets you the low-end studio software,
200 soundsets, and 300 loopsets… or if you want a little better
quality studio software and more soundsets and loopsets, you can spend
about $425 for high- end studio software, 600 soundsets, and 900
loopsets. That’s everything you need to make your own beats,
instrumentals, samples, loops, tracks, and complete demo cd’s. But why
did I say Don’t Buy Them?

Because you can get it all, the studio software and over 1,100 soundsets
and loopsets for under 30 bucks with Hip Hop Starz Record Producer and
Mixer Studio (see “about the author” at the bottom of this article).
This is an unheard of price for everything you need, and it is of such
good quality, I have dedicated an entire page of my Snoop Dogg website
to it. It is loaded with many features you will find on the high-end
software selling for $100 or more. Also, they are currently holding a
Win A Record Contract Contest with Doug E Fresh. Use the software and
enter to win!

So now you know how to make your own beats, instrumentals, samples,
loops, tracks, and even complete demo cd’s, and this brings us to our
next part…

Part II: Make Money Doing It…

There are many, many ways to make money with your own music. The first
thing you need to do, though, is break it down into pieces, or
components we will call them.

There are 4 key components to any track, or song. You have soundsets,
which are nothing more than beats, sounds, scratches, etc. You have
loopsets, which are your soundsets when put together in a loop. You have
instrumentals, which are completed tracks with no voice or lyrics.
Finally, you have completed tracks, which are basically just
instrumentals that include lyrics.

When you look at music from this angle, broken down into components, you
will start to see many ways to make money with your own. Like I
mentioned at the beginning of this report, people are not only paying
for completed tracks, they are also paying for the components
individually. If you can create you own, good components, people will
buy them.

Again, search the Internet for these components. Doing so will not only
show you how much you can sell your components for, but also where you
can sell them. As long as people are listening to music, there will
always be a demand for it, and I can’t see people stopping anytime soon.

If you are interested in learning how to make money with your own beats
in more detail, I recommend you check out Bob Bakers website (see “about
the author” at the bottom of this article). Bob Baker is a writer, indie
musician and former music magazine editor who is dedicated to showing
musicians of all kinds how to get exposure, connect with fans, sell more
CDs and increase their incomes through their artistic passions. He is
also the author of the Guerilla Music Marketing Handbook, as seen in the
major motion picture The School of Rock … and in VIBE, Music
Connection, Electronic Musician and American Songwriter magazines. This
is the guy you should listen to. Here are some of the things you will
find at his website…

- 197 Promotion Tips, Tricks, and Resources for Independent Musicians.

- 101 places to submit press releases, get reviewed, uncover PR
connections and promote your music on the Internet. Supplies the exact
booking agents, program directors, and other industry people.

- 50 ways to promote and sell your music on the Internet.

- And more, including his coveted Guerilla Music Marketing Handbook.

I hope this report has proved useful to you and I wish you all the best
as you learn how to make your own beats, tracks, and even complete demo
cd’s.

Musicians: How To Find Band Members
by: Kenny Auyoung

Looking for band members is never an easy task. You may first want to ask yourself what exactly you’re looking for – whether it is to join an existing band or find individual members to start your own band. Obviously, both have their differences and this should be answered first before you start your grueling search.

Join an existing band.

This is a great way for enthusiastic musicians to gain some playing experience right away, although it is sometimes harder to find these kinds of opportunities. These are established bands that are looking for single or multiple members for various reasons (their guitarist overdosed on cocaine, bass player got fired for drinking problems, etc). This might go without saying, but make sure you really do like the type of music a band plays before deciding to join their group! There are many musicians I know that play in a band where they don’t even like the music they play, all just to “gain experience” to get their foot in the door and hopefully move on to greener pastures. It can’t be stressed enough that if you don’t like the music you play, you’re going to do a half-assed job at it, so why bother?

Also, know your playing experience and limits. For example, if you’ve only started playing guitar learning all Green Day songs for a few months, don’t expect to join a thrash metal band that requires you to do sweep-picking, fast arpeggios, or any other insane guitar techniques. Make sure you choose a band where the technicality of the music they play is comfortable with your own skill level as a musician.

A huge advantage for joining an established band (maybe) is that most of the back-end stuff is already taken care of. This includes tasks such as finding an agent/manager to book your gigs, song development, contracts with music labels, etc. All you have to do is show up for rehearsals and play shows as scheduled.

A good resource to start finding these bands in need is going to your local rehearsal studios where most of them lurk. These are places where any musician can pay for a room to rehearse. Best of all, all the musicians you find there are often in your local area. Check out the bulletin boards where frequent bands post up classified ads that may go something like:

“Looking to join a band that rocks?! We are in need of a guitar player with lots of experience! Our influences include: Megadeth, In Flames, Black Sabbath, and many more! If interested, please contact Todd at xxxxxxxxxx.”

Or even better yet, post up your own classified ad on the bulletin board so bands can contact you instead. Local, independent music stores often have a bulletin board for classified ads as well. These are some of the best free ways to find band members in your area.

Disadvantages of joining an existing band

First and foremost, you have to learn all their songs usually in a limited period of time. The band might have a show coming up and you have to be able to play all their songs flawlessly note-for-note. Needless to say, this might be stressful for some musicians (except if their music is very straight forward and easy with pure 3 note power chords).

Another disadvantage is often your own music creativity is limited. Most bands prefer their original tunes to be played and carried on without any radical change. For example, if you just joined a band and replaced their old guitarist, the way the former guitarist played a particular solo, is the way the band wants it to be played by you. Often you must follow the same note structure of a music piece composed by another musician.

Organizing your own band

This is where you try to find individual musicians to start a new band, usually with similar music skills and backgrounds. Thinking of starting a band is the easy part, but the actual process of searching for the right people is harder than most people think. There are tons of musicians out there in the world but only a small percentage of those you may be compatible with. In addition, ask yourself: are you going to play in a band just for fun, or are you trying to make a living out of it? This will influence where you are going to start looking.

The internet is becoming a popular method for musicians to find other musicians. If you search “looking for musicians” in Google, you will easily find over 12,400,000 results – so how do you find what you’re looking for? Many ads posted in classifieds sections and on popular music forums will vaguely have descriptions such as this:

“Guitar player looking to form a band.”

Well, that’s just great.

Try refining your search to keywords such as the area you are in, what position you are looking for, etc. Example: “Looking for bass players in Toronto”. The first search result is an ad posted on www.craigslist.org, which by the way is an excellent place to get started. Try to only focus your attention on well-written ads that describe the musician, which includes how much playing experience he/she has, the types of music they are willing to play, and the intention of playing in a band. Or you may also want to post your own ad in music community forums and add a link to your audio/video samples that will likely interest more candidates. Audio/video samples that show off your best work are often the most influential factor of candidates contacting you back.

Be consistent with this. Chances are you won’t find someone right away on your first few posts, so try to refresh your ads on a weekly basis (but don’t spam!).

The internet is a large resource but don’t just rely solely on it. You may find you have better luck looking in local magazine’s classifieds ads section where it’s more direct. Also, because musicians have to pay to get their ads published in magazines, it shows that they are more serious about organizing a band.

Don’t limit yourself in a location

If you are serious about starting a career as a musician, you don’t just search for bands or members only in your local area. Living in smaller towns and cities won’t give you very many options in choosing the right band or member for you. Expand yourself to larger urban cities where the potential to find band members is greater.

Finding band members is like finding a good job. Know exactly what you want before searching, always have a good portfolio ready, and be consistent in your pursue. Goodluck!

“Major Overlooked Band Promotional Ideas”

I’m going to lay out a couple of easy-to-use band promotional ideas for you…

“Successful Band Promotions Start With Your Marketing Abilities”

“Tricks To Selling More CD’s At Gigs”

First make sure at every gig you are placing your CD sales table in the correct place. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen bands who setup their CD sales table in the darkest corner of the venue.

Think about it for a moment…If you were at a venue and listening to a band. Then, out of the corner of your eye… You happen to see a table setup with CD’s for sale. Except, it’s in the corner, and away from all the action at the venue…Would you go check it out, or even think about it?

When you get gigs at a new venue the first thing you must do is scope out the place for the most strategic spots available for your CD sales table. Heck, there are some bands that setup their table right in front of the stage! Another great place for setting up your CD sales table is by the entrance to the bathroom of the venue…I know it may sound strange, but think about it. Everyone there is bound to pass by your CD’s, and if you have one of your “Street Team” members selling CD’s at the table. Then, recruit another “Street Team” member to literally walk straight up to people asking them “Do You Have The CD Yet?” at the venue while you’re playing – Your CD sales will go through the roof!

Just be sure to have the one walking around lead the people who say that want to buy your CD straight to the CD sales table. This will allow them to go straight back into the crowd to gather more fans for you!

“Collecting Fan Email Addresses”

Also make sure you make it easy for people to leave email addresses at your CD sales table. Even better, would be to get people to give you the email in the middle of the gig. You might make up an “Email Song” then have someone pass around a guest book where everyone leaves their email address.

If you are not gigging your only option is to visit chat rooms and forums and talk to people and collect email addresses. Why collect all of these email addresses? Easy…You will be strating a “Band Newsletter” to stay in touch with your potential fans, and CD buyers!

“Selling Your CD Cheap”

Major retail outlets are clearing out old 74 mins CDR’s right now for very cheap. Put 3, 4, 5 of your tracks on each one and use cheap jewelcases. Then go somewhere where “your potential fans” would be hanging out, and hand the CD’s out for FREE in exchange for their email address.

You’ll get 100 subscribers for under $20.00! Which, is much cheaper than placing ads, doing flea markets and paying record stores to promote your CD.”

By Scott Meyer – Author of “It’s Time To Get Noticed” Guaranteed Band Promotion Ebook located at http://www.BandPromoting.com

About The Ebook:
“It’s Time To Get Noticed” – Is an amazing ebook that teaches musicians and bands ’step-by-step’ band promotion techniques to gain massive exposure for their music online and offline.
