Variations in Corset Design Throughout History

Variations in Corset Design Throughout History
By John Z Birch

The corset is a favourite among many different types of people, from Goths to Emo kids and fans of Jane Austin books to burlesque dancers. The corset is back and it is here to stay but if you’ve looked into getting one you will find there are many different styles so here are a few pointers.

There are two main styles of corset the under bust and the over bust. Over bust corsets extend over the woman’s breasts from the armpits and down to the hips, there by enclosing the torso. An underbust corset on the other hand begins at the bust and then extends down to the hips. Both of these styles have been used and modified throughout history to create different types of look.

Tudor and Elizabethan corsets were the first around. These lace up at the back and push up the bust therefore giving a small waist. These are likely to be very uncomfortable around the armpits and the bust.

Wasp-waist corsets, also known as waspies, were around during Victorian times. These underbust corsets got their name due to the shape they give a woman’s body. These corsets pull in sharply at the waist to give a slim look as well as pushing the bust upwards.

Later Victorian corsets were a bit more forgiving. They were similar to the wasp-waist corsets but with a gentler curve. This style reach down lower than others to cover the hips. More support is given all over and this style of corset gives the hips and the lower body more of a swaying effect.

Edwardian corsets known, as the S curve are a type of underbust corset that is long at the front which causes the bust to be pushed forward while the bottom is pushed out behind giving an S curve shape.

Another type of corset is known as a waist cincher. Waist cinchers are like small corsets that focus on the waist and they extend from the ribs down to the hips. Waist cinchers have a slimming effect and are a good alternative to garter belts and girdles and can be attached to stockings.

What Katie Did produce and sell a wide range of faux vintage lingerie including corsets and waist cinchers.

Corsetry - The Evolution of Their Sex Appeal

Corsetry - The Evolution of Their Sex Appeal
By Amanda Cotterill

Corsetry has come a long way since the Dark Ages. It’s not just the lack of scientific knowledge that made those times dark. Those were also dark days for womens underwear. Back then, corsetry was extremely constrictive, even potentially dangerous.

It’s no surprise that the word corset is derived from “corp,” the French word for body. After all, corsets are all about molding a woman’s body.

In the past, corsets had an extreme effect on a woman’s shape. For example, “tightlacing” was once a popular and common trend. Tightlacing is the process of wearing an extremely tightly-laced corset for long periods of time. The goal is to actually achieve a permanent reduction in waist size.

Lucky for us, womens underwear has shifted focus to comfort as well as seduction. Sometimes, though, you’ll still see tightlacing in Gothic-style sexy womens underwear.

The times changed and so did corsets. Now corsets are considered sexy underwear. They’re often worn more for sex appeal than for figure-forming purposes. In fact, many of today’s corsets don’t have any effect on the appearance of the wearer’s figure. They belong purely to the family of sexy womens underwear.

We women haven’t completely abandoned the figure-forming corset. Corsets are still popular womens underwear, several hundred years after their invention, because they can give you an hour glass figure. A full bust, trim waist, and curvaceous hips have long been considered the ideal body shape for a woman.

We feel sexy when we know that we look great. We’re not always 100% satisfied with the “assets” natured endowed us with. The right womens sexy underwear has the power to change that. Sexy underwear can be subtly functional. Your special someone will only know that you look fantastic. They’ll never suspect the transforming powers of the corset!

Part of the evolution of corsets has come in the form of color and styles. No more plain Jane white cotton and whale boning. Now you can find corsets in every color under the sun. Plus, they came in all your favorite fabric. If you’re in the market for the soft luxurious feel of womens silk underwear, there are corsets ready to please. You might not immediately think of corsets when you’re shopping for womens silk underwear. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the number of options available. It’s a fun departure from the normal satin slips.

Corsets are a step up from your typical womens sexy underwear. They’re not as easy to come across as nighties and babydolls. That is, you won’t readily find them on the racks of your local department store. Corsets are ideal for special occasions because your significant other will be completely surprised.

Corsets are also an important part of the world of fetish wear. In the nineties, fetish wear became a popular way to indulge in fantasies and walk on the wild side. The waist cincher in particular is a top choice in fetish wear. As the name suggests, it severely cinches the waist for an exaggerated hour glass effect.

Women have come a long way since the oppression of the 1300s. And the corset has come along with us. No longer restrictive like women’s lives in the Dark Ages, corsets now reflect a woman’s ability to express her sexuality.

Innerpartysystem Confirmed To Play Projekt Revolution

“If you’re looking for some beefy, groove-laden electro-rock then you’re gonna cream your pants at this!” - Kerrang!

INNERPARTYSYSTEM are confirmed to play the highly-anticipated Projekt Revolution show at Milton Keynes Bowl June 29th. Headlined by Linkin Park, innerpartysystem join Jay-Z, Pendulum, N*E*R*D, Enter Shikari and The Bravery on a bill that threatens to be one of the gigs of the summer!

INNERPARTYSYSTEM
is four guys who were reared in the bleak small towns that surround Reading, Pennsylvania. The weathered houses, rusted factories and sprawling farms make this the landscape of true America. These environments are stark and mechanical, and they are pregnant with dark and anxious hope – sentiments that Patrick Nissley, innerpartysystem’s main songwriter, carries in his writing. Innerpartysystem have a distinctive vision, as their songs incorporate throbbing electronic beats that nod towards Autechre, Chemical Brothers and Squarepusher but they are equally a rock band whom, like Nine Inch Nails, Pendulum and Prodigy, aren’t afraid to mix styles and mess with the formula.

Their first visit to the UK in April for the Camden Crawl immediately caught the attention of music heads and clued-up media leaders in the capital with the likes of Zane, Daniel P Carter, XFM, Scuzz and Kerrang! all lending their support. The superb Penta directed video, is currently the #1 requested video on Scuzz UK, and was also featured in the US on Myspace Music. Check it out on You Tube.

Nurse Lingerie Makes Your Fantasies Come True

Nurse Lingerie Makes Your Fantasies Come True
By Amanda Cotterill

Nurse lingerie and all the other types of costumes, such as schoolgirls, are a great way to spice up a comfortable relationship or add excitement to a new one. Role playing was a popular activity for those who have always felt more daring or adventurous. However, there are some out there who still have a few reservations. Luckily, buying your fantasy lingerie has become easier and more discreet with online buying and tasteful packaging. Only you and your partner will ever know you were the naughty nurse last night.

Role playing by taking advantage of fantasy uniforms is a great way to decrease inhibitions and have fun with sex. This is true regardless of where in the relationship spectrum you currently lie. There is no rule that says nurse lingerie can only be used when your sex life becomes stale and needs a boost. There is also no rule that says sexy air hostess costumes are only for the young and carefree. Everyone and anyone can benefit from a personal, erotic show between the sheets.

If you are just starting to get to know the significant other in your life, it is not uncommon for feelings of embarrassment or fear to be associated with the lovemaking aspect of the relationship. This is only natural, since trust may be an issue and you may feel uncomfortable about how your body is perceived. Nurse lingerie and other fantasy uniforms are a great way to break down some of these barriers. By opening up and sharing what turns you on the most - if he wants to seduce a sexy secretary and you want to bare it all as an upstairs maid - you are making connections above and beyond the physical side of the relationship.

At the same time, fantasy lingerie is great for the opposite ends of the spectrum: temporary sexual relationships and decades-long marriages. Both of these types of relationships are in equal positions to benefit from a transformation from nice woman to naughty nurse. On the one hand, casual relationships are often a great place to “try out” a sexual side you may not otherwise explore - in this case, role playing through seductive costumes. The fear of facing your partner the next day might be diminished if you know there is no permanent relationship that will be forming in the future. On the other hand, long-term relationships often need a bit of a sexual boost after the heady feeling of new love and lust start to fade. Adding spice to your relationship with an erotic, visual show can be a great way to rekindle an old flame and remember how much fun it is to be in bed together.

Regardless of where you are in your relationship, fantasy lingerie can be an exciting addition. With so many costumes to choose from - ranging from the naughty nurse to the sweet schoolgirl - you can definitely find something that you’ll both find fun. Whatever you choose, sexy costumes can open new and exciting doors for you and your partner.

Amanda Cotterill has been involved in the sexy lingerie uk market for many years. This article outlines the benefits of women wearing fantasy lingerie as if that needed much explaining!

Comic Books Value

Comic Books Value
By Robert Grazian

You might be sitting on a treasure chest without even knowing it. Almost everybody read comic when they were young, so you probably did, too. Some people have the foresight to keep those comics, and they are reaping the benefits now, because comic books value is always unpredictable, and the lucky ones find that they have ones which have extremely desirable comic books value.

There are many factors that decide a comic book’s value. Let us take a look at a few.

1. Condition: The condition the comic book is in is important. This is classified under a lot of headings, from mint, which is the best condition the comic book can possibly be, to poor. Realistically, you can expect most comic books to be anywhere from good to fine, with fine being a grade higher than very good. However, keep in mind that even if the rest of the comic is in great condition, if the cover is missing, the book’s value will come down considerably.

a. Is the cover still on the comic book, first, and if it is, is it on good condition? This is the single most important factor as far as the comic’s condition is concerned.

b. Are there any creases? The less noticeable creases there are, the higher your comic book will be priced.

c. Is the spine in good condition? This is another important consideration. You will start wishing you had never folded it back when you were reading it!

d. Are the staples rusted or discoloured? This is another important factor that decides how your comic book will be priced.

e. Are there any stains? Any kind of stain will lower the price of your comic.

f. Is anything torn, especially the corners? Or are they bent? If they are, obviously the value will go down.

g. Comic books value also depend on whether there are any pages missing. In short, you cannot expect much if the books are almost falling apart.

2. Rarity: As common sense dictates, the rarer the comic is, the higher its value will be. However, here, again, you have to have the cover of the comic to get a good price for it.

3. Popularity: The popularity of the comic in general is a question here. A rare edition of a Batman comic, for example, will fetch a much better price than a comic that is not that popular. Here, again, though, the way you market your comic books can make a lot of difference. There are plenty of collectors who specifically want out of the way comics, so you have to find these buyers if you want a good price for these comics.

If after reading that list, you think you might have something, get a professional to set the comic books value, and you will be all set.

Hot Costume Trends For 2008

Hot Costume Trends For 2008
By Heidi Loney

Pop Culture and Movies continue to influence costume trends and theme parties for this year. Costumes are not just for Halloween any more. Here are some of the biggest influences of the year:

Sex and the City

This is predicted to be the biggest chick flick ever! Theme parties and girls night out will never be the same. Of course, when dressing like Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, it won’t be complete without designer shoes and handbags, jewelry and the latest fashion forward clothing. Wigs can make this even more fun with a Sarah Jessica curly style or a sleek Samantha coif. Don’t forget to add a Cosmopolitan.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

There was plenty of hype for this four times a charm flick, even when the hero is a senior citizen Leather whips, felt fedoras and leather bomber jackets will be all the rage. The era has been moved from World War II to the fifties with Russians as the bad guys. The black page boy will become a big hit this year fashioned after Cate Blanchette’s KGB resident naughty girl.

Ironman

This movie has already broken records at the box office. Robert Downey Jr’s Ironman is sure to be a hit - especially with the younger set. Disguise costumes is releasing a licensed costume for kids and adults that will be available by the end of the summer.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

This has been a very big franchise in the cinema world and it will continue to be very successful in 2008 with the release of the latest movie just after Halloween. Rubies offers a large selection of officially licensed Harry Potter costumes.

Hanna Montana

Can’t say I get it, but tweens are eating this stuff up. Miley Cyrus, better know as Hannah Montana, has girls scrambling to dress in her style of clothes, makeup and accessories.

Sweeney Todd

Pack up your Jack Sparrow costume! Pirates are out and killer barbers are in - largely due to Johnny Depp’s creepy murderer. Despite it’s 2007 release, Tim Burton’s vision of Sweeney Todd is sure to be a huge hit for all come this Halloween. Who thought that Victorian squallor could be so chic (dripping with lots of blood of course).

Star Wars - The Clone Wars

30 years ago, I dressed as Princess Leia for Halloween. Who’d of thought it would be as popular as ever. Star Wars will be huge again this year with the Clone Wars - an animated feature film due in August. Rubies has a full selection of Star Wars costumes for adults and kids. What’s new? Princess Leia sexy slave outfit.

Other hot items:

It’s too early to tell, but Batman and the Incredible Hulk both are releasing movies this year, so these could be big influences.

What’s out:

Pirates have been huge for the last several years, thanks largely to Pirates of the Caribbean. This year, that trend has come to a grinding halt. It will continue to be popular with the little ones. Also, Spiderman took a nosedive in 2007, and will continue to loose ground. Superheroes have great longevity - so we will see Spidy make a comeback.

Darkfaery Subculture Magazine @ Soonercon

Hey, Everyone! Well, it’s spring/summer 2008 and you know that means! Events, contests, and shows!
This year Darkfaery Subculture/Darkspace is pleased to announce we will attending Soonercon ‘08 in a professional fashion. That’s right! After being in the hospital for most of last year I am back to work on hundreds of new projects and attending events is number one on my list. (Doing some of my own shows is second!)
If you are attending Soonercon, please come over to us and give a shout, it’s been a year or two since we were out with video and I have missed you guys. VNV Nation doesn’t really count since I was still sick and couldn’t socialize.
We’ll be taking photos and video so you guys who are always asking when we’ll be updating our gallery with fan photos and event photos now is your chance to get in them. There will be lots of events to choose from at Soonercon so if you are trying to nail us down look for us in costume at Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Masquerade Ball, Sinnercon Dance, and probably most of the kinky events, like the kinky meet-and-greet, complete with a performance by Wicked Harem Belly Dance from Tulsa. Plans include a workshop series on the ethics and etiquette of convention (not conventional) sex, frank discussions of alternative life/lovestyles, and erotic art how-to’s. Z wanted me to remind you we can be found at the gaming tables too. :)
If you can’t attend, don’t worry, I’ll post info on how you can watch our videos on cable, MySpace, and YouTube. If you do come out, don’t be afraid of the camera, it won’t be afraid of you!

About Soonercon
http://www.soonercon.info/

SoonerCon is a fan run multi-genre convention held annually in Oklahoma City.

If you’ve been around the Oklahoma City area for a while, the name may sound familiar. Here’s why. There used to be a club in Oklahoma City called STAR OKC. Like most fans, they wanted a convention. After putting on a few one-shot types in the late 1970s and early 1980s, these folks, mostly high-school age through just out of college youngsters, decided to get organized, work hard to raise some money, and try to get something started. SoonerCon 1 happened twenty one years ago, in June of 1986. The con was begun and ramrodded by the Chair of SoonerCon 1, Mike Hodge. What he and many other helpers achieved lasted through SoonerCon 13 in 1997. Lots of artist and writer guests, from Tim Powers and Gene Wolfe to Brad Foster and Robin Bailey, were welcomed to Oklahoma City. During those years SoonerCon had hundreds of staff and helpers, and up until the last few years SoonerCon was “owned” by STAR OKC.

With SoonerCon’s exclusive emphasis on traditional SF/fantasy books and art, making it a “lit con,” a move arose as well for a local charity “media con” emphasizing genre TV/film, comics, gaming and pop culture actors, designers, and other guests–especially from Star Trek. Thus was born ThunderCon, which debuted in June 2001, balancing SoonerCon’s November setting, and lasted through seven annual editions and often with staff and helpers working both. The new con operated with a non-profit board and involved all the local fan clubs interested, from Dr. Who, Babylon 5 and Trek’s Starfleet chapters to gaming, modelbuilding, real space and even Dark Shadows! With “BoomerCon” judged a little too cute for a sister event, this project was named in honor of both Oklahoma’s spring weather, its Indian heritage and the state’s heroic 45th Infantry Division, the Thunderbirds—and so ThunderCon was born, its logo even adapted from the 45th’s patch. ThunderCon was created and first run by another member of STAR OKC named Larry Nemecek, who with his wife Janet later moved to Hollywood to work on STAR TREK for Paramount. Yea, fanboys! A few other conventions have also taken place in the OKC area, but haven’t “taken root” for more than a year.

Tattoo Conventions A Must For Ink Lovers
By Nelly C

Tattoos have today become a symbol of personal belief, a style statement and also a mark of affiliation. Some do it purely for fashion purposes. Whatever their reasons are, tattoos are here to stay. It is not just celebrities who have made tattoos popular. Style icons have advertised tattoos by sporting them, music divas have promoted its use and the media has projected it as the trendiest thing to do for this generation.

The collective uses of imagery of artists from all over the world who have experimented tattoos with the brilliant colors and each design have emphasized the freedom of each individual. It is no wonder that tattoos have gained so much in terms of status in the modern world.

A tattoo convention aims to bring all lovers of tattoo from across the world under one roof. Numerous conventions are held across the globe and each tattoo-loving country in the world takes pride in hosting a convention which brings the creators from many parts of the world to exchange notes and admire the brilliance of one another.

Like any business convention, tattoo conventions are also places of interactivity, learning and sharing. The overall atmosphere of a tattoo convention is that of a reunion of like-minded individuals who value this art. In fact, the atmosphere is so charged, yet congenial that you can not help but get enthused yourself. A congregation of some of the most visually stunning pieces of art, created with imagination and professional expertise, right under your skin.

If you want to be part of a visually magical world and meet some of the most brilliant artists from around the world, behind the most mind-boggling designs. Going to a convention near you is a must!
